Monday: You're excited about affiliate marketing.
Tuesday: Someone tells you AI automation is where the real opportunity is.
Wednesday: You discover a new platform that promises to build your entire business in minutes.
Thursday: A YouTube video convinces you that you've been approaching everything wrong.
Friday: You're researching a completely different business model.
And somehow, despite being busy all week, you're no closer to earning your first dollar.
Congratulations.
You've encountered Shiny Object Syndrome.
And if you're serious about building an online business, it's one of the most important enemies you'll need to defeat.
Why shiny objects are so attractive
New opportunities feel exciting.
They promise faster results, easier systems, and fewer obstacles.
There's also a psychological reward in discovering something new. The anticipation of a breakthrough can feel more satisfying than doing the repetitive work required to create one.
That's why researching a new business idea can feel more exciting than finishing the one you already started.
The danger isn't curiosity.
It's constantly resetting your progress.
Every time you abandon your current project, you lose momentum and delay the feedback that could help you improve.
The opportunity isn't always the problem
Here's something worth considering.
Maybe your current business model isn't broken.
Maybe you simply haven't given it enough focused effort to find out.
Affiliate marketing, digital products, content creation, and email marketing can all be legitimate ways to build a business.
But none of them works automatically just because you've discovered the right software.
They require an offer, an audience, a way to reach that audience, and consistent follow-through.
Switching strategies every few days doesn't eliminate that work.
It just moves it somewhere else.
Enter the Shiny Object Slayers
This is exactly why we created the Shiny Object Slayers mindset.
It's not about ignoring new technology or refusing to learn.
It's about becoming intentional.
We don't chase every opportunity.
We evaluate opportunities based on whether they support what we're already building.
Shep is our unofficial Chief Focus Officer.
And if he could talk, I'm pretty sure his advice would be:
"Pick the ball. Chase the ball. Stop looking at everybody else's ball."
Simple? Yes.
Surprisingly useful? Also yes.
The 30-day focus challenge
Here's an experiment worth trying.
For the next 30 days, commit to one business model and one clearly defined project.
For example, if you're building an affiliate marketing business, your project might be launching one simple funnel.
During those 30 days:
• Keep a list of interesting new ideas, but don't pursue them immediately.
• Limit learning to information needed for your current task.
• Measure completed actions instead of hours spent researching.
• Review your results weekly before deciding what to change.
This doesn't mean blindly sticking with a bad idea forever.
It means giving your chosen strategy a reasonable chance to produce useful information.
Your Shiny Object Slayer mission
Open a note on your phone or computer.
Title it: The Shiny Object Parking Lot.
Write down every exciting business idea, tool, or opportunity currently competing for your attention.
Then choose the ONE project you're actively building.
Everything else goes into the parking lot.
Now ask yourself:
What's the next action that moves this project closer to being live?
Do that first.
Focus isn't about having fewer opportunities. It's about giving the right opportunity enough attention to matter.
Shep says: Squirrels are exciting. But we've got a mission. 🛡️🐾
